Van grew up on a farm in Oklahoma where his love for gardening got a start from his father and grand father. He has been an adult educator, entrepeneur, businessman. He has volunteered at MBG since 1998. He became a Master Gardener in 2001. He volunteers with Flora Conservancy, Shriners Hospital as a landscape advisor. He is past chairman of the Master Gardener Speakers Bureau. His current topics with the Speakers Bureau are Create Winter Interest in Your Garden, Landscape Design I and II, and Growing soil for Beautiful Gardens.
