Van grew up on a farm in Oklahoma where his love for gardening got a start from his father and grandfather. He has been an adult educator, entrepeneur, businessman. He has volunteered at the Missouri Botanical Garden since 1998. He became a Master Gardener in 2001. He volunteers with Flora Conservancy, and Shriners Hospital as a landscape advisor. He is the past chairman of the Master Gardener Speakers Bureau.
